Wrexham on a Plate – Recipe Competition
WREXHAM ON A PLATE
A newly opened coffee shop at the Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives is inviting the people of Wrexham to present examples of typical dishes from the area.
“We’ve been astounded by the popularity of our bara brith and lobsgows,” said Paula Hanmer of Bwtri. “We thought it would be interesting to take this a step further to see what other traditional dishes Wrexham people may have.”
Bwtri, a True Taste gold award winning deli/cafe, opened last February, and are accepting applications until the end May 27th.
“It could be ‘Nain’s’ old recipe or a traditional family dish,” added Paula. “We’d like a copy of the recipe with a short description of its history and any other interesting story that may accompany it.”
Up to four dishes will be chosen and will go forward to be featured on the Bwtri’s Specials menu in June, with each winner receiving a £25 Bwtri hamper of Welsh food. Three age categories have been set up to encourage foodies of all age to compete.
“We have a under 11s category, under 18s and the adult category,” said Paula. “We’ve also teamed up with Local Food First Wrexham to promote the competition as we’re keen to feature as much local produce in the winning recipes as well.”
“Traditional dishes can say a lot about an area’s culture and heritage,” explained Caroline Dawson who is the local food project officer from Northern Marches Cymru, “and we’re very pleased to be able to work with Bwtri to support this competition.”
The local food project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Entry forms are available from the museum, by phoning 01758 613113, e-mailing taste@bwtri.com or by downloading from www.localfoodfirstwrexham.co.uk CLICK HERE Submissions will be judged by Paula and Caroline.

Lots of other food events are in the pipeline for 2011, so please visit the events page on this website, add localfoodfirst as a friend on facebook or watch out for press releases in the local press.

The aim of the dinner is to encourage local food establishments to use more local produce and attempt to recreate the dishes on their own menus. The black tie evening will allow networking with the producers that have reared, grown and produced the ingredients for the dinner.
