Local Food is on the Buses…..

Tuesday, February 22, 2011 AT 03:02 PM

Buses in and around Wrexham will be raising awareness about vital work that’s helping to breathe new life into rural communities.

Two initiatives – Local Food First Wrexham and the Rural Services Pilot Project – will be promoted on Arriva buses as part of a campaign to boost support for local produce and community-based businesses.

Launched 12 months ago, Local Food First is helping food and drink producers in Wrexham tap into new markets, as well as encouraging more people to ‘buy local.’

The scheme recently launched a ‘must-have’ local food directory and has various activities lined up for 2011 to promote Wrexham-based food and drink. These include a food tent at the National Eisteddfod and tourist targeted ‘food trails’ around the county.

Meanwhile, the Rural Services Pilot Project has been running a grant scheme to help provide essential facilities that are often the hub of rural communities.

One example is Trevor Stores. A grant was awarded to help pay for its refurbishment and allow it to start trading again. The stores now provide newspapers, food and other daily essentials for the residents of Trevor, Garth and surrounding villages.

Local Food First Wrexham and the Rural Services Pilot Project have received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union.

Both projects are being led by Northern Marches Cymru, which helps deliver rural regeneration programmes in the county borough.

David Darlington, chair of Northern Marches Cymru, said: “These bus adverts are part of a much wider campaign to promote local food and we hope they will increase people’s interest in buying Wrexham-based produce.

“What’s more, there’s still plenty of scope for local producers to get involved in the project and we’d encourage anyone who hasn’t done so to get in touch.”

Councillor Rodney Skelland, Wrexham Council’s lead member for regeneration and corporate governance, added: “Both of these projects have provided valuable support to local business and the communities they serve.

“The local food initiative is helping producers drum-up business and encouraging shoppers to buy local produce, while the Rural Services Pilot Project has helped revitalise village stores and other facilities that are so important to our rural communities.”
