Wrexham Food Festival – chef who cooked for Connery
A NEW food festival will feature a former chef who tantalised the tastebuds of James Bond actor Sean Connery.
Robert Didier, who trained under culinary legend Raymond Blanc and cooked for the 007 star, will be one of the main attractions at the Wrexham Food Festival.
His company Orchard Pigs makes a range of handmade pies and pastries – including its trademark Tractor wheel pie, using local free range produce.
The festival is a new showcase for local food producers like Robert and will be held on Llwyn Isaf at the Guildhall on May 15-16.There will be about 40 exhibitors.
Food Technology Centre embraces firms from N E Wales
FOOD producers in North East Wales are being encouraged to access the facilities and expertise offered by Anglesey’s Food Technology Centre (FTC).
It follows a tour of the Llangefni faculty at Coleg Menai organised this week by Northern Marches Cymru as part of its Wrexham Local Food First project.
Six small scale producers, ranging from Robert Didier’s Orchard Pigs to Deb Kenton’s Tyn y Mynydd Meats, were shown around the hi-tech premises.
FTC business development executive Paul Roberts said: “Producers from around Wales do use the centre but we would encourage others to take advantage of the facilities here – with the A55, we’re really quite accessible.
“We also arrange on-site visits and offer technical advice over the phone.”
Some 40 food producers in the Wrexham area are signed up to the Food First project, which endeavours to find new outlets, arrange events and undertake marketing.
Project officer Caroline Dawson said a key target market were schools in the area. As well as offering food education visits, the project wants to make in-roads into school menus.
“Given the scale of public sector procurements, it’s difficult for small producers to access schools,” she said. “My dream is to organise occasional theme days at schools when their menus are completely taken over by products from local food firms.”
Also on the Anglesey iterinary was Derimon Smokery, a True Taste winner seen as an example of good practise.
Other Wrexham area food producers taking part were Blue, a blueberry growing enterprise run by Gill and David Butterworth; Gerry Moreton, of Seren Foods; Jo Edwards, of Aballu Truffles; and egg producer Tony Kynaston.
